Before you go under the knife… what you need to think about
Can’t decide between having cosmetic surgery or a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment?
It’s a tricky one, but we can help you weigh up the pros and cons.
We asked Cosmedic Professionals founder, Rita Porreca for her thoughts on cosmetic surgery vs non-surgical, and the ultimate question: Should you, or shouldn’t you?
Let’s face it, there’s still a stigma around cosmetic surgery procedures, which leaves many people reluctant to admit they’ve ‘had work done’. Why? Well, no one likes being judged and that’s especially so with cosmetic surgery.
Why do people want cosmetic procedures?
It’s a psychological thing. Mainstream and social media bombard us with airbrushed images of perfection. Spoiler alert: there’s no such thing! But there’s a pressure to compare and compete. “Young girls want nose jobs when they might only need small corrections with filler to change their nose shape. Older people have cosmetic surgery to look younger so they can get – and keep – a job for longer,” Rita explains.
We can’t avoid ageing, and cosmetic surgery can definitely reverse some of its signs and correct imperfections or uneven features. And by helping you look better, you gain extra confidence. But before you decide on surgery, here are some things to think about.
What results do you want?
If you want to look as natural as possible, just refreshed and not like you’ve had work done, non-surgical cosmetic treatments offer amazing results. If you want a more radical change, then surgery might be for you.
“When someone asks my advice, I ask them: ‘how far do you want to take this?’” Rita says. “It depends on your expectations. With something like a non-surgical eyelift, if someone has lots of saggy skin around the eyes, I will say to them: ‘this is just going to be a small, subtle change, and you’ll need a few treatments. It’s not a one-off, like surgery’.”
Beware of complications
No surgical procedure is 100% guaranteed. Rita cautions: “You may fix one problem, but then you may need to fix another because of things like scarring or unevenness after an eye lift or facelift. Are you prepared to take that risk? Do your research.
If you decide on cosmetic surgery, choosing a surgeon is crucial. Rita advises consulting several doctors for a variety of opinions, to make sure you feel comfortable with them and that they’re highly experienced in the procedure you want.
“Don’t go by price alone, or their social media profile. Ask lots of questions. If they all say the same thing, then it’s easier to choose, but if each doctor says something different, you need to investigate why,” Rita says.
How much will cosmetic surgery really change your life?
You need to ask yourself this question. Be honest: how much will a procedure truly help your self-esteem, or make you look the way you want? If something goes wrong, it could have the opposite effect for you, and be difficult to correct.
If you’re rethinking having cosmetic surgery, the good news is these days, many non-surgical treatments offer fantastic results with less down time and at a fraction of the cost.
Start subtle and build up
Beauty treatments have come a long way compared to 20 years ago, when a facial was just a simple facial. Now, as Rita says, facials actually DO things. They can change the structure of your skin, and tighten your face.
Treatments like Plasma can even replace injectables like Botox or fillers. It’s great to treat lines and lift the skin, and you don’t need top up treatments as often as injectables. Although using both gives amazing results.
Want a softer, more supple look? Plasma can do that too, as can Skin Needling. And you don’t need a scalpel for a facelift or tummy tuck when Hi Fu skin tightening gives a mini facelift and can help shift stubborn fat.
The added beauty of non-surgical cosmetic treatments is you can always adjust them for the results you want. With surgery, you can’t. Once it’s done, it’s done.
So, if you want a more naturally enhanced look, non-surgical cosmetic treatments are the way to go. Our treatments deliver real results.
