Non-surgical vs surgical cosmetic treatments: What’s best for your skin?

As we get older, many of us consider investing in anti-ageing treatments to keep our youthful looks for longer. And in choosing between treatments, you’ve probably asked yourself these questions:

Are the results of non-surgical cosmetic treatments too good to be true?

Could I face the risks and costs of going under the knife?

It’s not an easy decision, but expert advice is at hand.

Cosmedic Professionals founder, Rita Porreca has over 30 years’ experience in the cosmetic industry. Here, she shares her knowledge to help you decide which treatments can give you the results you’re after.

What results do you want to see from a cosmetic treatment? And what are you prepared to do (and pay) to get them?

Don’t choose a treatment on price alone.

“A lot have people have high expectations for non-surgical, which is more for people wanting to prevent the effects of ageing, but who want to still look natural,” Rita says. “Some things we can’t do with non-surgical, like if someone has a lot of excess skin, or they want that double chin gone in one treatment, well that’s not going to happen. They’d need several treatments of something like HIFU for that.”

Non-surgical treatments require more sessions to achieve lasting results, say, every 6 months to a year to maintain the results.

But if you want to see a big difference in way you look and not have to worry about it for 10 years, cosmetic surgery could be for you. Not without risk, though.

Be honest about your expectations and if you’re still not sure always try the non-surgical approach first, as there is less downtime and fewer side effects.

Matching your expectations to the right treatment comes down to a thorough consultation with a professional in cosmetic procedures.

See before and after photos and ask about their experience in whatever you’re interested in having done. Find out all the pros and cons with surgery, ask lots of questions about down time, scarring and talk to lots of specialists in that field. Some doctors have lots of experience but not in everything; some are better at different things.

“You have to be quite clear with people on what a treatment will do, how it will work and that not all treatments work straight away,” Rita explains. “With surgical you see results right away. But with HIFU for example, it takes up to 6 months to get your maximum result. With a plasma eyelift, it’s 3 months apart for treatments. But if it’s only a little bit of sagging skin you’d get results right away. If there’s more, you might need 2 or 3 treatments. So, it’s a slower process than a surgical eyelift.”

If you’re the type of person who worries about scars, then surgery’s probably not for you. Scarring is the number 1 side effect of surgical cosmetic procedures that people want to avoid. Other complications include infection, slow healing and uncomfortably tight skin initially.

“I do believe there’s room for both surgical and non-surgical, but I feel if you have surgery, you’re replacing one problem with another when it comes to scarring,” Rita says. “Some skins don’t heal as well as others. It all depends on your skin type and colour. People with Fitzpatrick skin types 3-6, which is darker, are more prone to scarring. The lighter the skin type, the less scarring. In most cases, it’s nothing to do with surgeon, it’s more to do with how the skin heals. It also depends how well someone looks after their skin after surgery.”

If you’re not ready to go under the knife, but still want visible results, try these highly effective treatments:

  1. HIFU mini facelift and skin tightening
For results with no downtime, this is your go-to treatment. Some people see results within 2 months, with benefits continuing up to 6 months. The more you have it, the quicker you see results, with skin springing back after the 2nd or 3rd treatment. Younger skins respond faster.
  2. Plasma Lift
For this, you’ll need 5 days downtime and treatments 3 months apart. It addresses fine crepey skin around the eyes and mouth, plus tummy stretch marks.
  3.  Injectables
You’ll see instant results with treatments like dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. To maintain results, expect to top up every 3 to 4 months.
  4. Skin needling
This treatment promotes collagen to plump up your skin and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. You’ll definitely see results regardless of your age, but it’s not a one-treatment fix, you need a series for best results around 2 to 4 weeks apart.

One thing to remember, Rita says, is no treatment has results that last forever. Even if you’ve had surgery, your skin will eventually slacken. This is where non-surgical treatments like HIFU can help the surgical results last longer.

Ultimately, we can’t stop the ageing process but we can slow it down.
